Office Style Tips

Posted on 20 January 2015

Well it’s almost all over for another year, Australia Day signals the end of the “holiday season”, and although some of us have already been back at work, we’ve still been in holiday mode and taking things and little easier. This includes our wardrobe choices for the season. But now with the kids going back to school and businesses gearing up for another year, now it’s time to look at our “Office Style for 2015”.

There’s a confusing fine line between being chic and perhaps pushing the envelope too far, so here are a few tips from some styling icons.

Number One is be comfortable. Nothing sucks more than spending the entire day adjusting your outfit, and feeling uncomfortable. Unless you really don’t like your job or your work mates, dressing inappropriately should be avoided. Wearing a micro-mini with no tights and a boob tube for example, should probably be avoided.

Which brings us to style tip Number Two. Keep it Classy. Cleavage in a professional environment is a no-no. However a beautiful bra or camisole under something semi-sheer is totally fine in a more casual office environment. Save the low cut outfits for after work or the weekends.

Number Three. Just as that little black dress is a staple for those social outings, so you should invest in a few workplace staples for your wardrobe. Those no-brainers that you know are appropriate and comfortable, whether it’s dresses you know or your favourite black slacks. Items that can be alternated and dressed up or down according to your day ahead.

A natural and fresh look is tip Number Four. Makeup needs to be kept as neutral as possible, not to say that you can’t wear a bight coloured lipstick, just balance it with a clear natural complexion. If you have smoky eyes, then keep your lippy a more natural colour. No one wants to see you at 8am on the way to work with a full face of evening makeup, it will soon look like you’ve already spent last night out, so take your makeup touchup bag and save that look for after work.

Number Five. Have a bit of fun with your Nail Colour. Of course a great manicure and pedicure is essential, but then all bets are off. Playful nail colours are a huge trend right now, unfortunately if you work in a more conservative environment you’ll need to keep to more natural colours. But after work, you can always ramp things up with some great fashion bling rings. Which brings us to tip six.

Create a great stable of Go-To Accessories. Great fashion jewellery is always an asset, and the easiest way to alter a look instantly. Just as a great statement necklace can take an outfit from day to night, so to can great earrings, bangles, brooches and rings add a touch of individuality to your office staples. This is one area where you can really let go, have fun and experiment.
